PBL Collaborative Product

The above link is the result of a culminating project from three classmates whom have never yet physically met but work together online. It is designed with the teacher in mind who wishes to utilize a PBL method for instruction.

The main discipline that is targeted is the area of mathematics however PBL by design is interdisciplinary. Students participating in the project will utilize science and technology as well as language arts applications.

Research is showing a growing population in childhood obesity; this is a relative concern to families and teachers across America. With that topic in mind, we have developed this project.

Below are your guiding questions and activities (also provided on the product). Be sure to view the map for pacing as you work on this challenge. You will access each of the guiding activities and follow the instructions within each. Your product composed from each activity will be posted as a separate page in your own created wiki for the challenge. The entire challenge pacing will take approximately 2 weeks of class time, while some work will be created outside of class.

CHALLENGE: Create a plan that specifies and can implement the necessary changes to live a healthy lifestyle and avoid obesity.

  • Which method for calculating weight do you think is the most fair?
  • Will the amount of exercise change the amount of calories able to be consumed?
  • What is an effective exercise that can be in place to avoid obesity?
  • How could you compose a meal plan or weekly diet that would incoroporate the fundamentals of wellness and a healthy lifestyle? If you were to gain weight >15lbs. how would you correct that excess fat?
